Finding fun activities to keep my kids busy this summer has been a challenge to say the least! Especially those that don’t involve television, video games, iPhones or tablets. I remember my childhood. I remember being outdoors with my neighborhood friends. Rollerblading, kickball, sidewalk chalk and a game of hide and seek being the activities we just looked forward too. Things have changed but I still feel this responsibility to my kids to expose them to the world outside of all these electronics.

This summer we have focused on a lot of arts and crafts. And you know what!? They LOVE it! They get totally wrapped up in their creativity. They could spend a good two hours outdoors crafting. So when I saw these wooden do-it-yourself bird houses from Oriental Trading I thought, how perfect is this! They are easy enough for kids to put together and for them to paint. The BEST part, my kids are drawn outside everyday to check on their little bird house creations! They want to bird watch to see which little birdie will visit their house today.

This simple craft turned into great conversation for my kids and I. We talked about bird seed, different types of birds and  how to build something. Their bird house creations are on display for everyone and have been a big highlight to their daily routines!
Do you want to see how we made them!?

Follow the picture instructions for each bird house. There are three different houses so make sure you follow the correct house instructions.
TIP: we used glue to better hold the houses together. Once you add the bird seed they get a bit heavier.
You can paint all your wood pieces before or after assembly. We decided to put the houses together first and then paint.

Allow your bird houses to dry completely. Attach the twine for hanging. You can do this while putting your house together. Fill with bird seed. Hang your kids adorable bird house creations!
